Health, is about abilities, not diseases. Having no disease or the absence of disease doesn't mean one is healthy.
Most of us know someone who has no "health" problems but whom we think of as not being healthy. Or you can have Arthritis, parkinons, be frail or.............., and still have a good life, living as you wish. Healthy people have hopes and dreams and are shifting towards them, they develop abilities to do things as they want.
Health is the ability to
- recover from a shock, injury or trauma
- think for yourself, to be agile in thought and action, to be adaptable, creative and original
- live out one's hopes and dreams,
When you experience an injury, or a fearful event like a fall; there can be sustained muscular contraction and guarding reactions that become sustained and a habit. It distorts the optimal pathways and lowers effectiveness. It takes about 3 weeks for patterns of brain activity to become a habit; so many people have these well entrenched before they get off their crutches or walking sticks, moon boots or plasters. And because their attention is on where the injury, the pain or the splint is, the rest of the iceberg which is unseen and unnoticed perpetuates the pattern of the problem.
Sustained for long enough the limping and favouring looks like it's part of the person, but is really parasitic similar to the way that miseltoe looks like it is part of the tree, but sucks the life out of it. It looks like it belongs, but all the while it's sucking the joy and ease of life out of, in this case, the person with that parasitic habit, guarding or favouring. Exercising to change, without realising people train and exercise the habit they don't want.
That burdensome tension and contraction limits the easy and efficient transmission of force, making clumsy and awkward what would otherwise easy.
Life becomes heavy, effortful and clumsy.
Often these qualities go unnoticed, until someone skilled helps you to notice what you can't see or feel. People often call this process "getting old", but when this is peeled back you will feel agile, younger and vital. No matter what your age. You can learn to recognise the unhelpful organisation and unravel it so you restore and upgrade to even better than normal and new habits. You can have more options and agility.
Instead of just waiting for "healing", this is about learning how to recover better; from shocks and sustained pain responses, getting out of ruts and repeated disappointments.
Feldenkrais is about improving movement. It's paying attention to what and how you move, so that everything connected improves, especially by awareness, and choice. Each moment has Thinking, Feeling, Sensing and Moving components in varying degrees. When you increase and improve the quality of movement, the freedom to shift perspective, make decisions, (on the one hand, on the other hand), to be able to mobilise oneself to think more broadly, gives you much greater scope. Emotion, thought and sensation connected to moving shifts and can be navigated in new ways.
Even things we think of as pure thought, are changed by moving differently. Its not possible to read without movement. Sing or speak without movement. Indeed good singers know how to Sing with Their Whole Selves.
There is Running, (Walking, Jumping, ..........) with Your Whole Body. Beautiful running or walking happens when there is an even distribution of work, flowing sequences and effortlessness. It's how all of you work in sequence together.
By leaning to regulate oneself all over, stressful flight and fight or freeze and flow responses can revised and freed up. You can create better internal and choose better external environments for learning. You can learn to sustain those conditions in and for yourself that make learning easier.n
You can learn to learn.
Knowing how to do this gives you the means to be healthy; to address one's weaknesses in a healthy and expansive way, rather than being limited by unacknowledged blind spots, limiting how you can address problems.
A healthy person is able to pursue their hopes and dreams. It's about the ability to navigate towards your personal aspirations, and learn and adjust as you go to navigate beyond the horizon of your present ideas. Knowing how to make learning pleasurable and comfortable is one of the essences of human life. That's also a Feldenkrais way.
When you restore awareness, confidence and ease to move, you can find and invent the best ways for you. Perform in music, drama, sport, fitness or in the garden without conflicting patterns of movement that would otherwise choke your performance
Heaviness, stuckness, tension, anxiety, fear, lacking confidence in balance, limping, guarding, favouring and the like become history. You can move how you want and broaden your scope and hopes you want to achieve. You can become graceful, flowing and at ease.
Step out of pain and dire straits, back into the walk of life.
Learn how to make small shifts that make big differences, sustainably. You can DO things differently. Have choices. Options. You will have habits but are not so attached to them that when variations are needed you can be inventive in developing them.
You can learn to move and live better, and your diagnosis may well stay the same. (e.g. You can have the same arthritis and X-rays etc, but move around those limits and be relatively or completely trouble free.)
Add more life back into your years..... On any day 250,000 South Australians live in chronic pain resigned to being stuck. They and their families and friends struggle and suffer and are limited by that. Moving Health would make a big difference to that. less dependency on medication to disguise the symptoms, by learning how to listen and interpret sensations in ways that opens up options.
And noone needs to know Latin, anatomy or complicated scientific approaches to life. You'll get to reuse the principles of nature you used to get started in life, without the confusion of present conflicting ideas. You learnt to move to walk etc in the first years of life, sometimes those patterns are insufficiently developed and refined, or have become like the tangled ball of wool.........it's time to revise, clarify and unravel those movement programs, to update them and bridge gaps or missing pieces. After a while that all feels like common sense. With good conditions for learning it can even become common practice.
